What is the New Britain Adult High School Credit Diploma Program?

The New Britain Adult Education Center under the auspices of the New Britain Board of Education offers an adult credit diploma program for adults who are seeking their high school diploma. Students who are sixteen years of age or older who have officially withdrawn from school may enroll to complete requirements for an adult high school diploma.

What are the requirements for a New Britain Adult Credit High School Diploma?

A student must earn 20 credits to receive a New Britain Adult High School Credit Diploma in the following areas:

Subject Credits
English 4
Mathematics 3
Social Studies 3
Science 2
Vocational Ed/Arts 1
Electives 7

A minimum of 2 courses must be successfully completed through the New Britain Adult Education High School Credit Diploma Program before a diploma may be issued. At least one of these courses must be completed through class attendance or completion of a competency based curriculum packet. One of these may be earned at community service or military service occupational skills. Students may not receive their diploma before their daytime high school class has graduated.

What is the Adult Credit Diploma Classroom Program?

Classroom Program: Classes in English, Math, Social Studies, Science, Vocational Education/Arts, and electives are conducted at New Britain High School on Monday - Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Each class meets for 3 hours, one night per week for10 weeks. This program is helpful to the individual who desires a structured academic program and would benefit from classroom instruction as well as the interaction with teachers and other students.

What is the Adult Credit Diploma Individualized Program (IDP)?

Individualized Diploma Program: Credits may be earned as specified in the IDP Program Manual. The credits are earned by completion of competency-based curriculum packets. Work on the IDP curriculum packets must be arranged with the teacher on a first-come, first-serve basis. This program is for the individual who is self-motivated and self-directed in doing academic work. The teacher in this program serves as a resource and as a guide.

Who determines the course of study to receive an adult high school diploma?

Each student on entering the program will meet with the adult education counselor, to outline a program of study that will meet the needs of the student and fulfill requirements for the adult high school credit diploma. This program is based on credits previously earned and credits needed to meet requirements for graduation. 

What type of high school diploma is issued?

The New Britain Adult High School Credit Diploma is issued by the New Britain Board of Education. Diplomas are conferred at a graduation ceremony in June.  All diploma recipients are invited and strongly encouraged to attend this graduation ceremony.

Where are high school credit diploma classes held?

Daytime adult credit diploma packets are conducted at the Learning Center, 136 Main Street, New Britain.  Evening classes and packets are conducted at New Britain High School, 110 Mill Street, New Britain, CT.  For additional information call 860.229.6106.

What are the eligibility requirements for the adult high school credit diploma program?

Enrollment in the New Britain adult high school credit diploma program is open to individuals who meet the following criteria: 

must be 16 years of age
must be officially withdrawn from high school
must not have a high school diploma

What are the registration procedures?

Individuals who wish to enroll in the New Britain adult high school credit diploma program are asked to contact Mr. Soltis at New Britain Adult Education Center, telephone: 860.229.6106. He will make an appointment to meet with the person to review course options and to help the student plan a program of study. You will need to bring a copy of your high school transcript and withdrawal papers.  Students who are 16 and 17 years of age, must have an official withdrawal from signed by their parent.  Please refer to the Adult Credit Diploma Packet Program.

How are grades awarded?

Grades are awarded in the classroom program. Each teacher will explain his or her grading policy during the first week of class. A progress report will be issued after mid-term exams and report cards will be distributed at the end of the semester after final exams have been administered and graded.

How is a student's attendance monitored?

Attendance records are kept on a semester basis. State requirements mandate that all adult high school credit diploma classes must meet for a minimum of 60 hours. Students are permitted no more than two absences per class. Class withdrawal will result after the third absence. A student who is more than 10 minutes late for class is considered absent. Tardiness is not tolerated.
